Clemente, Carmine
Carmine is the former long-time Chairman of the Anatomy Department and Brain Research Institute at UCLA. He is the editor of the famous Gray’s Anatomy and author of the widely used Atlas of Human Anatomy. Carmine’s research has focused on brain mechanisms related to sexual and feeding behaviors, sleep and wakefulness, and nerve regeneration (which he has been investigating since his doctoral thesis). He has long been active in medical education nationally and has famously taught virtually every medical student at UCLA since the school opened in 1952 (and continues to do so).[(Personal Note: In 1964, when Carmine was chairman of the UCLA Department of Anatomy (where at the time most of UCLA’s neurophysiology research was being conducted), he invited me, all of 19 years old, to come to the UCLA Brain Research Institute to do my doctorate. I shall always be grateful. Robert Lawrence Kuhn]
