Ellis, George

George is a cosmologist and professor emeritus of applied mathematics at the University of Cape Town. He co-authored The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time with Stephen Hawking, and is considered one of the world's leading theorists in cosmology. He has proposed cosmological models of the universe that run counter to the now widely accepted inflationary models, which if true would mean a much smaller universe. George has developed innovative ideas in the relationship between science and religion, such as analyzing both top-down as well as bottom-up causation in hierarchial systems as mechanisms of divine action. He is president of International Society for Science and Religion and he won the Templeton Prize (2004).
