Timothy J. Pawl is Professor of Philosophy at the University of St. Thomas. He works on metaphysics and philosophical theology. In metaphysics, his work focuses on truthmaker theory, modality, and free will; in philosophical theology, he has published widely on transubstantiation, divine immutability, and Christology.
Pawl is the author of In Defense of Conciliar Christology: A Philosophical Essay (Oxford, 2016), in which he argues that traditional philosophical objections to the incarnation fail. His subsequent books include In Defense of Extended Conciliar Christology (Oxford, 2019), The Incarnation (Cambridge, 2020), and Jesus and the Genome: The Intersection of Christology and Biology (Cambridge, 2024, with Michael L. Peterson and Ben F. Brammell). He is also co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to Christology (Cambridge, 2025).
